Phnom Penh, July 24, 2025 — The Ministry of National Defence of the Kingdom of Cambodia has issued a stern condemnation of Thailand’s recent military actions along the border, describing them as brutal, unlawful, and a serious violation of Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a statement released this morning, the Ministry detailed a series of provocative acts by Thai forces that began around 06:30 local time. According to the statement, Thai troops violated existing agreements by climbing onto Ta Mone Thom Temple and placing barbed wire at its base. Shortly thereafter, at 07:04, a Thai drone was launched and flew over the area for two minutes, further escalating tensions. By 08:30, Thai forces reportedly fired shots into the area, and at 08:46, they allegedly opened fire on Cambodian troops stationed at Ta Mone Thom Temple.
The confrontation expanded to include Ta Krabey Temple, the Phnum Khmoch area, and the Mom Bei region. The Ministry also reported that Thai fighter jets dropped two bombs on the road leading to Wat Keo Sikha Kirisvarak, where Cambodian troops are deployed to secure the border in Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces.
In response to these aggressive acts, the Ministry stated that Cambodian armed forces exercised their legitimate right to self-defense at 08:47, within the borders of Cambodia’s sovereignty. “Thailand’s use of heavy weapons and the excessive deployment of troops in an incursion into Cambodian territory is a clear violation of the United Nations Charter, the ASEAN Charter, and fundamental principles of international law,” the statement read. “Such irresponsible and unlawful actions pose a serious threat to regional peace and stability, as well as the foundations of the international order.”
Cambodia called on the international community to condemn Thailand’s actions unequivocally and urged the Thai government to accept full responsibility for its repeated violations. The Ministry called for an immediate ceasefire, withdrawal of Thai forces from Cambodian territory, and a return to diplomatic dialogue.
While reaffirming their commitment to resolving disputes peacefully through diplomatic and legal channels, Cambodian authorities emphasized that the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) remain fully prepared to defend the nation against any aggression. “In accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, Cambodia reserves the legitimate right to self-defense and will respond resolutely to Thailand’s aggression,” the statement continued.
The Ministry also appealed to journalists and social media users to exercise caution and refrain from sharing unverified images, videos, or information that could jeopardize national security or spread misinformation, especially regarding military movements or weaponry.
Cambodia maintains its stance of seeking peaceful resolution and urges Thailand to cease hostilities, respect international law, and restore peace along the border.
